Lucy’s Studio

Facial expressions have intrigued me since I was child watching my mother relate to those around her, especially children. I am as entranced by expressions as she was, so to be able to recreate emotions on canvas allows me the opportunity to relive that joy.
Painting portraits with oil has its own fulfilling sense of softness given that it spreads effortlessly on the canvas. My use of linen canvas allows an even acceptance of the oil while keeping its rich texture.  Combining them to express the personalities of the subject creates a deep satisfaction that is mirrored in the eyes of the recipient.  As I continue to learn the secrets of Munsell’s Color System and William McGregor Paxton’s pallet, as taught by Marvin Mattelson, I find myself totally engrossed in the challenge of capturing people’s expressions. Time stands still during these moments of creativity and personal growth occurs with each painting session.
